Defying the will of 1.4 billion people is doomed to fail
2022-08-04 05:49

Ambassador Dai Qingli contributed an article to the Nassau Guardian on August 3rd entitled "Defying the will of 1.4 billion people is doomed to fail". The article stated China's firm opposition to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to China's Taiwan Region. Ambassador Dai also introduced the historical origin of the Taiwan question, and highlighted the common aspiration and sacred responsibility of all Chinese sons and daughters to realize the complete reunification of the motherland. The full text of the article is as follows:

On 2 August, despite China's firm opposition and diplomatic representations, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the U.S. House of Representatives insisted on visiting China's Taiwan region. This provocative visit is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has severely impacted the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, seriously infringes upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a wrong signal to the separatist forces agitating for "Taiwan independence". China firmly opposes and condemns this act, and has made serious démarche and strong protest to the United States.

There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The one-China principle has become a consensus of the international community and a basic norm governing international relations. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle.

As President Xi Jinping stressed during his recent phone conversation with US President Joe Biden, the historical ins and outs of the Taiwan question are crystal clear, and so are the fact and the status quo that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China. The one-China principle is the political foundation for China-US relations. China firmly opposes separatist moves toward "Taiwan independence" and interference by external forces, and would never allow any room for "Taiwan independence" forces in whatever form.

Taiwan's fate has always been linked to the fortunes of the motherland. Due to China's decline in modern times, Taiwan was colonized by the Dutch for 38 years in the 17th century. Yet its worse fate came in 1895 when the entire island was ceded to militarist Japan and colonized for half a century until Japan's defeat in World War II. Yet no sooner did Taiwan return to the embrace of the motherland than civil war broke out on the Chinese mainland between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party of China, which saw the Nationalist regime retreat from China's mainland to Taiwan in 1949. This episode of history was the origin of the peculiar state of protracted political stand-off between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in contemporary times.

If there's one thing that unites the more than 1.4 billion people in China and around the world, it is the wholehearted yearning for the complete reunification of the motherland. The will of the people is not to be defied, and the wheels of history cannot be reversed. No country, no forces and no individual should misjudge or underestimate the firm resolve, strong will and capability of the Chinese Government and people in defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity and achieving national reunification and rejuvenation.

The world expects major countries such as China and the United States to work together to fight the pandemic, safeguard food and energy security, and address the climate crisis. The right approach is for China and the United States to deal with each other on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, no-confrontation and win-win cooperation. The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of China, and no other country is entitled to act as a judge on the Taiwan question. China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the US Speaker's visit. All the consequences arising therefrom must be borne by the U.S. side and the separatist forces on Taiwan.
