Remarks by Ambassador Yan Jiarong at the Calligraphy and Wine Tasting Event
2025-08-12 07:07

President Dr. Moxey, Vice President Ms. Munroe, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Good evening!

It’s a great pleasure to join you. This is my second time at this annual Calligraphy and Wine Tasting Festival. I must thank the Bahamas-China Friendship Association and also all of you. You are the builders, contributors, and promoters of cultural exchange between our two countries!

Chinese calligraphy is a unique art. It’s like a poem without words, a dance without movement, a painting without images, and music without sound. Take the Chinese character for "human" (人)as an example. Two strokes leaning on each other— a pictograph of a human being. The character can be expressed in various styles and forms in calligraphy. Moreover, thousands of years later, we can still understand the words our ancestors wrote. Also, please note that two strokes leaning on each other means that no one can stand alone. Cooperation is something in the genes of Chinese culture.

With over 3,000 years of history, it’s one of China’s national treasures. In 2009, UNESCO added Chinese calligraphy to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Many ancient Chinese calligraphers loved drinking wine while creating their works. Over 1,600 years ago, Wang Xizhi, the "Sage of Calligraphy," wrote his masterpiece Lanting Xu during a gathering with friends and wine. Later, he tried to rewrite it sober, but it never matched the energy and beauty of his wine-inspired work. So today, we’re combining calligraphy with fine wines from around the world—a wonderful tribute and a warm cultural exchange!

Chinese calligraphy isn’t just for China. Today, over 190 countries and regions teach Chinese, and 85 countries include it in their national education systems. More than 30 million people out of China are learning Chinese.

I’m thrilled to hear that many of you are interested in the Chinese language, and some of you have even started to learn. China is the world’s second-largest economy, the top manufacturing country, and a major trade partner for over 150 nations. With a middle class of 400 million—soon to reach 800 million—China offers a vast market and endless opportunities. Speaking some Chinese will surely open more doors for you!

Two days ago, I watched a ZNS program in which President Moxey and Ms. Ford talked about helping vulnerable children and youth. Their dedication moved me deeply. As the largest developing country and a member of the Global South, China is committed to cooperating and supporting fellow Global South nations like The Bahamas. Today, I’m proud to announce a donation from the Chinese Embassy to support this event. Several of our diplomats and their families are here too—feel free to chat with them and try writing Chinese characters!

Enjoy the excellent blend of Chinese calligraphy and wines! Thank you!
