On 29 May 2026, following the general election in The Bahamas and the formation of the new government, Mr. Zhang Hongliang, Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Chinese Embassy in The Bahamas, published an article entitled “Understanding the Taiwan Question and the One-China Principle” in the Tribune and the Nassau Guardian in The Bahamas. Drawing on the outcomes of the recent China-U.S. summit meeting, the article explained the historical background of the Taiwan question and the essence of the one-China principle.

Emphasizing that the Taiwan question was a focal topic during the meeting between the Chinese and U.S. heads of state, the article stressed that the one-China principle is not only a prevailing consensus of the international community and a basic norm governing international relations, but also an important cornerstone for safeguarding the post-World War II international order.
The article exposed the political agenda of “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, which seek to advance separatist activities under the guise of so-called “civil diplomacy”. The article commended The Bahamas for its longstanding commitment to the one-China principle and for its understanding of China’s just position on issues bearing on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The article underscored that Taiwan has been an integral part of China since ancient times. Safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity is the sacred right of every sovereign state and a fundamental principle of international law. The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair and there should be no external interference.
